The grilled cheese stand was cheap. We went there for friend 2’s birthday, even though friend 1 thought it was bad. Friend 2 lives close now. She goes to school by the stand, which is how she knows it closed. The rest are spread from there, from Colorado in a straight line across the states. All the friends still had pearls in their eyes, walking together on Pearl Street with their grilled cheese.

Friend 4 started a radio show at college. Friend 1 and 2 tuned in. It was really good and friend 1 missed the times where she could wean her music taste off friend 4’s like a bike with permanent training wheels. She has to use discover weekly on Spotify now. It doesn’t know her as well.

Friend 1 wants to call. She’s stressed out and needs to get out of her house. Friend 4 agrees, but she doesn’t say when she actually can, and forgets to do so. Friend 3 is busy—she is going swimming. In Chicago winter? The rest wonder. They never call.

Friend 1 isn’t going home for Thanksgiving. She hopes they don’t have too much fun without her. She wants to go back to trying drugs and laughing in ugly pajamas. She misses friend 2’s mom. Friend 2 meant to say guys. Her spell check isn’t on.

Winter break is over. They all saw each other and realized they didn’t know a thing. They promised to stay in better contact. 

All the friends have realized how fast you can forget the things you love. But thankfully friend 1 will remember when friend 3 is swimming and friend 2 will remember when 1 and 4 have essay’s due. Friend 4 will text and 2 will answer. 3 will apologize for responding late and 1 won’t realize till next week she missed the whole thing. 

Despite the forgetting and missing and lateness, all the friends will still relish in each snippet of life they get from each other. Be that grilled cheese or sex or dungeons and dragons. To know anything of those you love, is worth more than knowing it all. All parts of a whole, making it so they can never truly fall apart.
